Will how you spend your money affect your insurance? Are you one of those lucky people with some extra cash on hand – perhaps several thousand dollars from some windfall like an inheritance or a bonus? Perhaps you're thinking of how to best make it work for you? Have you thought about how your choice might impact your insurance?

If you don’t need it for high-interest debt or to create that emergency fund you’ve always wanted, then you might consider paying off an auto loan, student loan, or even your mortgage. Since these are likely lower interest loans, you won’t save a lot on interest, but you could free up cash in your monthly budget that you can put to better use. But even if you can’t pay if off, the next best thing could be to pay it down. By reducing the loan principal, you can likely reduce your monthly payments.  For much more on this, read Jean Chatzky’s (Fortune Magazine), to learn why you should pay off loans sooner rather than later.

And if you do pay off your car loan or mortgage, then don’t leave your insurance agent out of the loop. You’ll need to remove the lender from your auto insurance or home insurance policy. Just as important is to let your agent know if you get a new loan for a car or a home. Get all the details in this article from ERIE Insurance.

Insurance Tip

If it has been some time since you sat down with your insurance agent to review your auto and home insurance policies, then why not arrange a meeting now? Among other things, it will let you be sure that your policies are not listing outdated information such as lenders on paid-off loans. This will help you avoid having a payment for an insurance claim go to the wrong party.

Pi day and insuranceThe world’s favorite irrational number, known as Pi (3.141592653) has a “day” devoted to it. That’s right, each March 14th, we devoted geeks celebrate Pi Day – 3/14 – make sense? If that’s not irrational enough, then how’s this: this year on 3/14/15 at 9:26:53 a.m. we don’t just get to match the first three digits of Pi but all TEN digits. If that’s not grand enough to impress you, then consider that this is the only moment in this century when that occurs.

If that still doesn’t pique your interest, then maybe you’d rather know about the new infographic by the Insurance Information Institute (III.ORG) showing 10 irrational insurance figures and facts.

One of the III’s irrational insurance facts relates to the use of motorcycle helmets: even though the use of a helmet has been proven to be 37% effective in preventing deaths among cyclists and about 67% effective in preventing brain injuries, the use of a motorcycle helmet is not universally required in the U.S. In fact, use of a helmet by a rider is only mandated in 19 states and D.C.

You’ll find the other nine Irrational Insurance Facts and Figures just as interesting. You can find the infographic,Irrational… Any Way You Slice It – Pi Day by the Numbers” on the III.ORG website.

Motorcycle Insurance Tip

Although using a helmet when you ride your bike is by most standards a prudent decision, it might also be a cost-saving decision. As with most types of insurance, motorcycle insurance offers certain discounts and options. If you have not done so lately, you’ll want to check with your insurance agent to explore your options and assure that you are receiving any discounts available and the best rate for your circumstances, whether wearing a helmet makes a difference or not.

Whiteout Driving SafetyWinter driving can be hazardous at best. But when snow and wind combine to produce a whiteout condition, your driving survival skills become most important. Obviously, if your forecast includes such conditions, the best course of action is to stay off the roads. But if you must drive, then heed these tips for safety:

  • Gradually slow down, bringing your speed down to what is suitable for the conditions. Not only will visibility be reduced, you will need more time and distance to stop or turn on the slippery roads.
  • Make all inputs to steering and braking smooth and gentle. Accelerating, braking or turning suddenly will could result in a spin or slide when traction is lost.

In “12 Tips for Driving in a Whiteout”, ErieSense.com offers, “In many parts of the country, driving through wind and snow is just a part of your average winter. However, it’s not every day that you get caught driving in a whiteout… Drivers are often caught off guard when snow is being blown across roadways and visibility becomes virtually nonexistent. If weather conditions are bad enough, make an executive decision to stay home.”

Read the entire article to learn driving in a winter whiteout and how to best protect yourself.

Auto Insurance Tip

We all know we should be prepared in advance by having a survival kit in the car when driving during bad winter weather. Being prepared also means knowing in advance that you have all the insurance coverage you’ll need in case an accident does occur. Be sure also to take along your insurance agent’s phone number and your auto insurance policy information, just in case. A brief visit with your agent should assure you that you are sufficiently covered for your circumstances.

Happy Valentine’s Day from the Daniel Howley Insurance Agency here in Rockville, MD.

Have you heard those who say that Valentine’s Day is no more than a ploy by the greeting card industry – just like Mother’s Day and other sentimental holidays – to entice consumers to spend money on love? Well, perhaps that’s true. But most of us still find ourselves browsing the aisles for candy, cards and more. In fact, BankRate.com reports that the National Retail Federation estimated that each of us would spend an average of $133.91 for Valentine's Day in 2014, and that trend has certainly not come down since then.

Valentine-chocolateWhen you think about Valentine’s Day gifts, is chocolate is what comes to your mind? You can certainly find many  reasonably priced versions on the shelf this time of year. But for the most discriminating Valentine, nothing short of the La Madeline au Truffe from Connecticut chocolatier, Knipschildt will do. This incredible chocolate delight is described as a rare French Perigord truffle ensconced in a ganache made from Valrhona dark chocolate, truffle oil, vanilla and heavy cream before being dunked in more dark chocolate and cocoa powder. If this sounds like just what you want this year, you’ll need to know that this chocolate is priced at $2,600 per pound. Made to order, it will be delivered "lying on a bed of sugar pearls" – and so it should be!

But if such expensive chocolate truffles are not what you have in mind and assuming that money is no object, then maybe one of these other outrageously expensive gifts appeals to you:

  • Is fragrance your weakness? Perfumes and colognes make great gifts for a Valentine, but especially if it is "No. 1" perfume for women by Clive Christian. This world acclaimed fragrance comes in a gold-crowned 1.6-ounce bottle priced at $865 – a bargain when compared with “Imperial Majesty” also by Clive Christian at $215,000 per bottle.
  • If you believe it’s essential to have flowers on Valentine’s Day – no matter the price, then take a look at the Juliet Rose. A dozen of these roses can cost you just under $300, but the Juliet is often called the "£3 million rose" (that’s five million U.S. dollars) because that is the amount that rose breeder, David Austin, spent during the 15 years it took him to create the rose.
  • Are you thinking perhaps a card might be best? If you haven’t found just the right greeting yet, then perhaps this not-so-simple and quite extraordinary card would be just right. Gilded Age Greetings will create your couture Valentine's card by hand for a mere $3500! What’s that? You’re thinking it must be made of gold? Well, you’re partially correct. You won’t believe it when you see it.

If food, flowers, or fragrance are too soon forgotten in your mind, then you could invest your fortune in something more permanent like a new iPhone embellished with 200 grams of solid 18k gold. This luxury device comes is presented in a Cherry Oak Finished Box. Called the “Solid Gold Superstar” the phone is SIM free, factory unlocked to ALL networks and comes with the usual accessories. It’s priced at just under $58,000. But if you prefer, you may choose to upgrade to the “Solid Gold Superstar ICE” which is further encrusted with 364 diamonds (5.5 carats in total) for a cost of about $82,000.

Homeowners Insurance Tip

It is clear that these outrageous gifts are not for anyone but the super rich. It’s more than likely that you’ll be looking at more moderately priced gifts. Even so, if your Valentine’s Day plans include a gift of jewelry or some other expensive item, we’d remind you to get it insured as soon as possible. The Insurance Information Institute warns us that jewelry losses are among the most frequent of all home insurance content-related insurance claims. So do yourself a favor and take a moment to visit the III.ORG website where you can learn the four relatively simple steps needed to ensure adequate protection for jewelry and other expensive gifts.
